Current app: Reshu PDF Reader v0.3.5

This summary describes public version 0.3.5. It is based on APK/source checks, not a packet-level network audit.

Choices are separate and off by default

Push notifications use Firebase Cloud Messaging data-only messages with an in-app inbox. Push is opt-in and OFF by default. Optional app-usage sharing uses Firebase Analytics, is also OFF by default, and is a separate choice from push. Custom usage events carry no book text, but Firebase Analytics is not anonymous. This version does not use Crashlytics.

Camera, translation and backups

The camera-to-book flow processes OCR on device with Tesseract. Offline translation supports English, Hindi and Urdu, with translation-model downloads only after consent. Punjabi translation is not supported.

Encrypted backups contain library/bookmark metadata, with a separate recovery key and a weekly option. Original book files are NOT included. Backup exports and cloud folders use your chosen Android file provider. Keep the recovery key separately; without it, an encrypted backup cannot be read.

Permissions in v0.3.5

The app has no CAMERA permission: capture uses a system or external camera activity, and Reshu receives the chosen photo. It has no broad storage, contacts, location or advertising-ID permission.

Network, microphone, notification, foreground media/data-processing, wake-lock, boot, vibration, battery-optimization and biometric permissions support related app functions. Firebase push permission is present for opt-in messaging. An SDK-bundled Play install-referrer attribution capability is also present; this does not make the app anonymous or identifier-free. Optional accessibility-service access for volume-key controls remains separately enabled by you.

When data can leave the device

  • Online text-to-speech may send reading text to your installed speech provider. This includes automatic mode when it chooses an online voice. Offline voices avoid online TTS processing.
  • System voice search can process speech through its provider. The microphone is used for voice notes and system voice search.
  • Update checks contact the hosted version file through a GET request; the hosting service receives ordinary network information.
  • Model downloads, chosen document/backup providers and Android OS backup can involve network services.
  • User-directed sharing sends the files you choose. Reports can include book titles, file references, vocabulary and errors. Review them before sharing.
  • If you enable app-usage sharing or push, Firebase services process information for those selected functions. No release-announcement notification was sent for this release.

Do not assume that “local” features mean no information can ever leave the device. Your consent choices, installed voice provider, backup settings and selected file provider all matter.

Historical app summary: Reshu PDF Reader v0.3.4

The following section describes the earlier version only. It does not describe 0.3.5.

This app summary is based on the public APK permissions and source review, not a network-traffic audit. It does not describe unreleased versions.

Stored on your device

The library, reading position, bookmarks, vocabulary, statistics, settings and voice notes are stored locally. Documents are chosen through Android’s file picker, which can include a cloud provider. OCR processing is local. This version has no account login, advertising SDK, Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics or Firebase push messaging.

When information can leave your device

  • The update check contacts this site at most once a day. Hosting receives ordinary network information, but no book text is included in that check.
  • Online text-to-speech, including automatic voice selection when an online voice is used, may send text to your installed speech provider. Choose an offline voice to avoid online TTS processing.
  • System voice search may process speech through its provider.
  • Sharing or sending a report sends files you choose. Reports can contain book titles, file references, vocabulary and errors. Review them before sharing.
  • Backup exports go to the location or provider you choose. Android’s own cloud backup can also apply; app-lock preferences are excluded.

Permissions

The microphone is used for voice-note recording and system voice search. Optional accessibility-service access is enabled by you for volume-key reading controls. Notification, foreground media-playback, biometric and battery-optimization permissions support their related app functions. The public v0.3.4 manifest has no camera, contacts, location or broad storage permission.

“Stored locally” does not mean no information ever leaves the device. Your installed speech provider, Android backup settings and files you choose to share matter.

Permissions inside an app

Review the app’s permission explanations and Android’s permission controls. Do not assume this website notice covers an app’s voice services or other data handling.
